Adopting A Rescued Yorkie

Posted on 29 September 2008 by Amanda - Teacup Yorkie Dog Lover

If you are thinking about adopting a rescued yorkie then firstly let me congratulate you as it is a wonderful gesture to make and secondly there are several points you should consider before rushing into your local rescue home.

There is no such thing as the perfect rescued dog, do not expect to walk into a rescue center and discover this immaculate, little dog just waiting to be homed. Yes, they might appear to be perfect on the outside but it is what lies beneath the surface that you need to be concerned about.

A high percentage of the dogs that end up in a rescue center have been mistreated. This does not always mean cruelly handled such as beating the dog or locking the dog away from the world. It can also be mistreatment through neglect, forgetting to feed the dog or not adhering to the regular veterinary visits for annual vaccinations.

So you need to be aware that your sweet, little Yorkshire terrier may indeed possess some bad behavioral traits. These can be anything from barking a lot to a distinct fear of a particular thing. My own rescue dog, although not a yorkie but a terrier / collie cross, has a fear of anything new and unusual. She will growl menacingly if she does not recognize an item. Once she would not progress along our normal woodland pathway until I moved a branch that had fallen to the side of the pathway, she knew something was different!

Normally a reputable rescue center will assess all the new dogs that enter their establishment and therefore they will know of any problems that the yorkie may have.

The ages of rescued yorkies can vary considerably, some may even be puppies as sadly many pregnant female dogs are abandoned before they have their litter of pups.

Some will be fairly elderly and wishing for a loving home to see out their twilight years and some will just be adult dogs so you need to confirm in your own mind what age yorkie you would like to home.

Yorkies can be prone to bronchitis and they can also suffer from tooth decay at an early age, another problem with them being such a small breed is that they do not tolerate anesthetic very well.

Due to their tooth decay it is strongly advised that yorkies are fed a dry food diet as this helps to clean their teeth better than a meat based diet.

One of the best ways to find yorkie rescue centers is via the internet or through newspaper adverts. The price of a rescued yorkie is dependable on the individual rescue centers, most request a donation and the total of the recommended amount has increased recently. They have to cover their costs of caring for the dogs and also they hope to deter people that are not genuine by asking for more money.

The approximate total is $150 / $268 this not only purchases your chosen yorkie but goes towards the care of the others in the rescue center.

Numerous dogs that end up in rescue centers come from puppy mills or puppy farms. These produce puppies in huge amounts with no regard for the condition of the dogs or the puppies, they are run out of greed for the money and not out of love for the dogs.

If you home a yorkie that has arrived in a rescue center from a puppy mill be aware that this little dog has possibly never even witnessed the light of day or the kindness of man before. It will be terrified of each and every new situation and will not be house trained.

With patience and love most of these frightened little yorkies can turn around into lovely, happy dogs. This is the biggest benefit of adopting a rescued yorkie, the sheer delight when your new found canine friend trusts you and approaches you for something as pure and simple as a hug.

hi my name is terri and i would love to adopted a male teacup yorkie i live alone and i would make a good home for him i love dogs if there is any in corpus christi texas please think of me thank you

  14. Bart - Lover of all Things Yorkie Says:

    Terri,

Its very hard to find a free yorkie. A discounted Yorkie is easier to find. Texas is one of the states with a larger interest in the breed.

You might try and find a rescue center and have them watch out for a toy breed dog for you. Sometimes, when a puppy mill is shut down they’ll have a few yorkies. Due to the high price and demand, puppy mills always have a yorkie.

Usually though these pups come with about the same price tag as they need so much medical attention. I have seen one pup that had been rescued, but her eyeball was hanging from her face. Thankfully the rescuers had the resources to get her medical attention.

That is an extreme example. Mostly, the yorkshire terrier will have grown so much hair that it can’t move its legs due to the matting and entanglement. it will be dehydrated, malnourished, and completely in need of attention. I tip my hat to dog rescuers around the world.

So thats a bit of what you;ll be getting your self into. The center will have fixed most of those issues before you can take the dog home. They will need a lot of affection. Yorkies are big on that.

  31. Carmen Rivera Says:

I am a animal lover. I have had several dogs in my life. Two of them I had to give to either neighbors or animal shelter. When I had to move I gave my dog, Fluffy to a shelter in two days someone adopted him. I found fluffy wandering the streets. It was like I had had him forever. I now reside in Kissimmee, Florida. My husband works nights and during the day he works side jobs. I am disabled, so I could only have a little puppy. I suffer from severe anxiety and depression. I know if I had a puppy it will make me feel alot better. Plus, I would give that puppy all of my love. I would really like a male yorkie for they are easier to take care of. I really only have had male dogs in my life. Just the yesterday a neighbor was selling a yorkie for $250. I really cant afford it. I live on a fixed income. Awaiting response. God Bless. Thank you.
