Adopting a Yorkshire Terrier

Posted on 25 September 2008 by Amanda - Teacup Yorkie Dog Lover

If you’re thinking of adopting a Yorkie, good for you! Adoption can be a great, affordable choice for someone who wants to welcome a dog into their home, without paying a huge breeder fee. Yorkie adoption differs from rescue, because dogs up for adoption normally implies you’re getting your dog from a shelter, or breeder who wants to rid himself of the runt of the liter. There are hundreds of dogs now in shelters that need forever homes, and if you’re lucky enough to find a Yorkshire Terrier you should take advantage!

Yorkies that are in shelters for adoption are there because their owners surrendered them, they were found as strays, or they were brought in as puppies by owners who have chosen not to spay or neuter their animals. If you are lucky enough to find puppies in need of homes, do your research on the breed before taking that step. You’ll need to provide your Yorkie puppy with chew toys, wee pads, and a small crate to sleep in so that he or she feels comfortable in your new home. An older Yorkie that’s been found, or surrendered may have some socialization issues that need to be addressed [much like a rescue dog] and you can speak with your adoption agency on what training would be needed. Many shelters have dog training classes that are available if you choose to adopt an animal from their establishment, and you should take advantage! Check out your local ASPCA to see what adopting a dog entails, to see if you are a good match for a pet. Adopting an older dog who’s been through a trauma, can be a wonderful experience for both you, and the pet! Dogs who are adopted tend to bond with their owners on a wonderful level, and you can enjoy many years of companionship if you take the time to look around for the right dog. If you’re set on a Yorkshire Terrier, call your local shelters to ask if they can inform you when any adoptable dogs come inĀ  most are happy to comply, and you can use the time you’ll be waiting for that phone call to read all about the breed.

When you choose to adopt a Yorkie, you are saving a life. Many shelters these days choose to kill dogs that can’t find forever homes within a certain period of time, especially if they’re older. When you adopt an older Yorkshire Terrier you don’t have to deal with the drama that can come along with adopting a puppy; puppies are like infants, and older dogs are more independent. Adopting a Yorkie will save you a ton of money too! Adoption fees run anywhere from a hundred, to three hundred dollars but ninety percent of the time the dog comes with all it’s shot, and is fixed which saves you money in the long run. Adoption really is the way to go, and you should check out your local Yorkie rescue if you’re looking for a new pet.

  5. dave yorkie owner Says:

the only problem i found with rescue groups at least in my area is
what they DEMAND you to do , 1 someone must be home all the time with dog
2 yard must be fenced ,, my yard is unfenced and he knows his boundries 3 if your already have a dog they must be spayed or nutered , ( my three year old rescued yorkie is not fixed so they think i am bad person ,, god its not like he runs the neighbor hood looking for
females 4 dog can not be left alone for longer than 3hrs a day with out
being left out ,, i am single my yorkie is alone from 7:00 am till 5:00 pm
and has held his waste with no problems ,, he is such a good boy ,, only had accidents when he is sick ( runs ) which i understand , well enought ranting ,, i would try a pound before a rescue group
