Coming home to a Yorkie with a hurt leg.

Posted on 16 March 2009 by Francis - Kennel Owner

It happens. Whether one likes it or not, I did come home to a tiny Yorkie hurt leg. All I can say is that it was very alarming and I could have hit the roof if that expression was real.

Minus all the stress and shock… the hurt leg would have been called normal at any rate. Of course there was a lot of emotion and panic upon coming home to a Yorkie that had medical issues.

This happens. A limping Yorkie is no easy sight to look at. First you panic and become ecstatic. You are drowned in emotion of fear without knowledge of what to do. After the panic, there comes reason. You have to check the leg whether you like it or not.

I am no expert but I do think and rationalize on what to do. I did have a dog with a hurt leg when I came home. Surprisingly, he was running towards me when I was about to dismount the car.  There was a limp on the hind leg. Reasoning comes, I checked if the puppy was weak and in this case he was obviously not. As if he ran towards me like a little kid who got hit intentionally with a baseball by one of the bullies in school.

Calmly, I laid him down and checked what it was. There was a red spot and some swollen tissue which indicated some sort of insect bite. I can only think of a cockroach when the Yorkie was sleeping. Coming home to a tiny Yorkie hurt leg that was caused by a naughty cockroach? Boy was I furious.

Like a responsible dog owner, I called the Vet. She told me to give the Yorkie 250mg of ascorbic acid and place some antiseptic on the wound. I did as I was told and tried to stay up and see what result it may produce.

The tiny animal did get his sleep on my lap as I unintentionally dozed off into the night. Morning came and the dog was nowhere near me so I scurried out (still in my working clothes from the previous day) and looked for him.

The tough little cookie was playing with a towel in the yard. Just as if nothing happened, he was just as agitated as always wanting to play. I took a bath and changed then prepared a voyager kennel for him to ride in. After putting him in the car, I closed all windows in the house and started spraying the entire home with insecticide. I did not want to have this problem for long.

After spraying, I went to the dog park and observed my dog as he scampered around with the other canines. His limp seemed to have vanished and as if to him, nothing happened.

After a few hours, we headed home and looked forward to another hour of cleaning. I left my dog in the car and looked at the house. There was significant number of roaches I had to sweep off the kitchen floor ad the garage.

Battle one was over. I made it a habit to use insecticide the place once a week to rule out all insects. It did pay off, his ridiculous problem was solved.
