When I got new puppies I had limitless questions about how to take care of them. I have looked at many dog books, many of which were informative.
But I have to admit, online dog forums provide something that books can never provide: personal advice from experienced pet owners.
Most dog books are written impersonally. This is for a good reason- this way the book can be chocked full of useful information. If the book was filled with personal experiences they may or may not be applicable or relevant to the reader- thus less useful information. But in an online forum one may ask individualized questions about personal real life problems and receive answers from many experienced pet owners. Another useful online reference for new and old-time pet owners are a variety of sites that offer many resources such as information about breeds of dogs as well as pet products.
Some great resources:
www.doggroups.com:
This site offer dog food coupons when you sign up as well as gifts that you can order from the site for your dog. The site also includes information about dog breeders of specific breeds and puppies for sale. Dogs are listed by breed with information about temperament and how to provide for your pet’s physical and psychological needs. For instance, the Doberman pinscher is loyal and alert, and watches over the house naturally–poodles tend to be little more mild-mannered, but will guard if trained.
Eons offers an online community offering membership and question submission. Members may submit questions to other pet owners about the care of a new pet, such as what to feed your dog, how to care for a puppy, or where to enter your dog in competitions. Results of such a search provide information about competitions in your area and around the world. This site also alerts users to pet medication interactions and pet food, toy, and bedding recalls. Another plus: Eons holds periodical photo contests that are easy access on the site.
The American kennel club is a expert source of information about dog breeds. This site is a must if you plan on training your dog to compete in dog shows. The AKC site also offers certificates that dogs and their owners can earn for good behavior and other achievements.
I hope this information is useful! Good luck!
