The Gold Coast Yorkshire Terrier Club like other kennel clubs, is registered as a non-profit organization with the purpose of networking  with other Yorkshire Terrier owners, enlightening Yorkie enthusiasts with important and promulgate the best interests of the breed.

Early 70s was when some Yorkie lovers met in a social group at Jack and Flo Young’s home to discuss our favorite topic. They formalized the group later on and Jack Flo became the first president. As they progress, they were joined by another group from Ft. Lauderdale to form the “Gold Coast Yorkshire Terrier Club.”

The kennel club held informal meetings at the homes of selected members discussing any and all topics regarding Yorkies. They also started to have guest veterinarians and experts to speak each month. The enthusiasm spread not only to Yorkie owners but to other pet enthusiasts as well. Other attractions I can imagine are home cooked meals and specialty desserts as if it was a book club in the old days.

Subsequently, contests were held several times a year in the parking lot behind Boca Raton’s City Hall. Judges were composed of local breeders and professional judges in the canine world. The contests ranged from breed standards, best costumes, the longest tail and other fun categories. It was a big picnic.

Situated in Boca Raton, it was the middle point from Palm Bay to Miami and became the meeting place for the club. National recognition was given to this community of enthusiasts as the membership grew. It got the nod of approval from Mother Yorkie club- Yorkshire Terrier Club of America.

The Club was licensed by American Kennel Club on May 1, 1992. The Club held its first dog show on December 4, 1992.

To this date, the club still continues its activities in much like the same manner as before. Thy still have those luncheon meetings and come up with events to promulgate the best interests of the breed.

Membership applications can be taken from their website as well as information on the breed standard and other useful details that you may want to look at. Find the Goldcoast Yorkshire terrier club on the web at www.goldcoastyorkieclub.org .
