This one I picked up from a friend who didn’t know what to do anymore.
This Dog, had sores all over its body and needed to be treated asap. She had a limp on both hind legs, I later on found out that there were badly bleeding wounds on her paws. It must have been real painful to be walking wounded.
I fed her Lamb and Rice and she was much obliged as she gobbled two bowlfuls of the kibbles. She seemed to want more so I gave her another cup. I think she needs the energy and nutrients to recover well.
After the lunch, I gave her a bath with Sulfur Soap. I let the soap lather for five minutes and let the lather sink in to the skin. I rinsed her thoroughly with water and gave her another bath doing the same procedure.
I toweled her dry and I used a blower to eliminate the damp parts. After that I gave her a badly needed haircut. I trimmed and cut around the sores. When I say what I was up against, we decided to remove all the hair on her body.
The haircut did not seem to bother her as she cooperated well. I thought she’d be putting up a fight because my friend warned me that she was a bit fierce.
After trimming the hair until the skin showed, we found ourselves a red dog. Yeesh, Poor pet. We let her rest for a while in a clean cage and I headed off to the drugstore to get some medicine for her.
When I got home, she stood up as if telling me “I’m ready to be treated”. I got her out of the cage, placed her on a high table, tried to massage her body to relax her. I was careful not to touch any of the sores. Massage is a valuable pet care thing.
As soon as she settled, I dabbed a cotton ball of Listerine on her large wounds. The thing must have stung because she was reacting to the liquid. In all fairness, she never bit me. I continued dabbing until the scabs were picked up and the wounds were a bit cleaner. I did the same procedure on the smaller ones and the major ones on her rear paws.
After that, I place the antibiotic ointment on her wounds generously. I made sure it touched the surface of the skin and not just the leftover hair.
You can see on the picture the treated sores and what the antibiotic cream looks like. This is after the fourth day of treatment. The wounds have dried and she seems a bit better. I also noticed a stronger appetite and what I would imagine as serenity. She would often lay and rest as if she had not rested in years.
I am still continuing the pet care treatment: bath (every 4 days), Listerine and the antibiotic. The latter two are done about three to four times daily. Believe me, this picture looks a lot better. She looked like raw beef in the meat shop when we got her.
