If you’re considering rescuing a Yorkshire Terrier, good for you! Rescuing an animal in need is one of the nicest things you can do, but the main thing to remember is rescuing a dog of any breed is very different from heading to your local breeder; rescue dogs have been surrendered for a reason, and you may have your work cut out for you.
If a Yorkie is at a rescue agency it can be for any number of reasons: the owner simply didn’t have time for their new pet, or passed away. Many couples find they want to get rid of their dog when children come along kids and dogs can make for a wonderful mix, but if you don’t have the time, and patience to socialize them you are going to have issues. Yorkies tend to end up in shelters because their older, and old dogs are hard to find homes for this breed can live up to fifteen years, and some outlast their owners! Many rescues will not have puppies for adoption, so if you’re looking for a mature dog, rescuing a yorkshire terrier may be your best choice.
When you are rescuing, many of the dogs come from puppy mills.
You’ve probably heard this term used before, but many don’t know exactly what a puppy mill is, and we can clear that up for you. Puppy Mills are breeders that want to produce a lot of dogs, in a short amount of time, for as cheap as possible and more often than not, in terrible conditions. Many puppy mills are located in rural areas, and keep their puppies in terrible conditions [multiple dogs in cages, dirty water and lack of food, small enclosures etc..] These establishments breed so many dogs, in such a short period of time that breed mutations can occur, and many puppy mill pets are susceptible to illness, and early death. If you choose to adopt a dog that’s been rescued from a puppy mill, you may have to deal with health issues [dental, low weight etc] but depending on the rescue agency, medicine and vet bills will be provided for, and you’ll be saving a life.
Rescuing a yorkshire terrier is a big decision. One must consider: Depending on the situation the Yorkie was in before coming into your home, you may have behavioral issues that need to be addressed. If the dog lived in tiny conditions, it no doubt did it’s business [aka poo and pee] in a crate like setting, and as a result will need help potty training. You can help speed the process along by using wee wee pads, which the dog will hopefully naturally head to when it’s bathroom time, but you may have some accidents for a few weeks while you work on training your Yorkie to go outside. Your rescued Yorkie will also need extensive socialization which means that you’ll need to bring him [or her] around other people, and dogs so that your pet can become comfortable in social situations.
The average cost for adopting a Yorkie can vary; websites like the Yorkshire Rescue group offer a load of information on how you can go about fostering, or adopting a Yorkshire terrier. The average cost starts at about $150, and goes up depending on any health issues the dog may have. If you aren’t sure about adoption, you can fill out a foster application, and welcome a Yorkie in your home on a short term basis, until you feel you’re ready to adopt, or the dog finds an alternative forever home. Either way, you’re going to be saving a life in need, and we wish you the best of luck.

Liz,
It really is funny how people just cling onto these little pups. I couldn’t let Isabella go after she was placed in my arms.

We have a Yorkie who is now almost 4 mos. old, and when we got him the people were all great and wonderful over the phone, but, he was full of worms and some kind of bugs that had infested in his ears and onto his skin then his whole body was covered. I had no idea that he had this, but, when we picked him up she had 3 puppies all male, and wanted female, one was heavy and long hair, one was really small and short hair and then there was my little Tommie, he is long hair, and when they were placed on the ground, he just guivered but, he walked over to me, and looked up and I was done, he was mine, no matter what. I picked him up and we drove back, he had a very odd smell, and I asked about it she told me it was a pine oil that they used to keep the puppies from getting the bugs in the ear. (they already had and when I bathed the little one and checked his ears they smelled so bad, and I found colonies of the crap on his body, I was just sick for him. We went to our vet the next day, she said they use the pine oil to mask the scent of the infection in his ears, he got current on his shots, and received meds for the ickies. He weighed a little under 24 ounces at 8 weeks, he now weighs 3 pounds and 4 oz. and I love him so much. I am told that he basically was a rescue puppy because the place he came from was closed the week after we took him. I am so glad he is our little boy.
