Our yorkies were not easy to housebreak.
Anyone you ask will tell you they have heard yorkies are difficult to housebreak. There could be various reasons why yorkies are so resistant to housebreaking. I think that the most important reason that every yorkie owner or yorkie lover considering adopting a yorkie should know is: Terriers are territorial.
Yorkshire Terriers are included in that category. Terriers have always been known for being territorial. We all know that dogs mark their territory by urinating. For some unknown reason this behavior is just inherent. Our yorkies like large spaces to be set aside for housebreaking.
I have bought several pooch pads in the largest sizes available to give them enough room. They are so territorial that when one corner of a pooch pad is covered they will stop urinating there. I pay close attention and rotate the pads so a clean corner is available.
They think that if the pooch pad is somewhat peed on it is already claimed. If you have adopted a yorkie and plan on housebreaking them I would highly recommend using pooch pads, the larger the better. Extra-large sizes probably aren’t necessary unless you wish to cover a large area such as the floor of a cage.
