The mystery of the runaway urine

Posted on 23 December 2008 by Beth

The Yorkies like the pooch pads a lot. They use them fairly well or so I thought until one day as I gathered the used pooch pads for a run through the washing machine I noticed urine spots right below the pooch pad.

Hmmm. how curious. I couldn’t figure out how the spots originated or why the Yorkies had decided they would use the carpet instead of the pooch pads. It just didn’t seem fair! For quite a while I had believed that my teacup Yorkies were house trained. And then I find secret spots months later! Yorkie housetraining is so difficult!

I was puzzled for a while. I thought of many possible explanations. Maybe the dogs were staging a revolt. Maybe the dogs felt neglected and were punishing us (just kidding.)

Regardless of the reason why, I had to figure out a way to solve the mysterious problem!

Unfortunately the runaway urine spots remained a mystery until a month later. I noticed my yorkie was using the pooch pad.

I watched carefully, hoping that if he did purposefully not use the pooch pad I could maybe see a clue in his behavior that would lead me to his motivation in using the carpet (hey, it was a long shot, but I was at my wit’s end.)

I was not prepared for what I saw.

My yorkie’s front paws were on the pad. Urine trickled beneath him. His tail wagged with excitement because he was using the pooch pad! The problem? His back paws were placed on the carpet!!! He thought he was doing what he was taught, while peeing all over the place the whole time!!!

Mystery solved. Now how to teach him that all paws must be on the pooch pad?
