Housetraining your Yorkshire Terrier

At the end of the day, toy breeds are more of a challenge to train than large dogs. Why is this? Many owners of toy breeds tend to treat their dogs like children, and from an early age they are spoiled rotten, and carried around instead of treated like the dogs they are!If you think it’s cute that your little Yorkie jumps onto your lap, chances are, it is pretty adorable but it’s not proper behavior, and this little jump could turn into a real issue in the long run. Remember that even though your Yorkshire Terrier is tiny, and cute to boot it will need proper training to be happy [and you'll be happier too in the long run!]

The first thing you need to remember is that even though your dog is tiny, he or she needs to learn to walk properly on a leash. You’ll be tempted to purchase one of those little dog carrying cases, and that’s fine!  But your Yorkie should learn first and foremost to walk properly on a leash, and be completely comfortable doing so. From the moment you bring your Yorkie home, get him acclimated with a collar, and leash, and take him for frequent walks. Despite their small size, these pups do need a load of exercise, and this is key to having a well behaved pet .

Second, is potty training. Yorkie housetraining does not need to be rocket scientce. The most efficient method for potty training a dog of any size is to crate train your Yorkshire Terrier. Wee wee pads can be effective during the day – and you can place them by the door so that your pet knows to go there when he needs to use the bathroom, but during the night when accidents are likely to happen while you sleep, crate your pup so that he learns to hold it in until the morning. Make your pets crate as cozy as possible with blankets and toys, but try to refrain from putting water in there so that accidents don’t happen overnight. In the beginning accidents in the house are almost inevitable, but with time and proper training your Yorkie will be letting YOU know when it’s potty time! Yorkies have been known to have some difficulty potty training, but with patience, and positive feedback it can be done.

Like all toy breeds, Yorkies have a personality that triples their size. Like a child, your pet will need to be worked with on a daily basis, so that he can remember and pick up on commands quickly. Puppies are easiest to train because they are blank slats, but older dogs can pose a challenge, especially if bad behavior has been ignored. Don’t give up! Yorkshire Terriers are smart, and with persistence will catch on. This breed has a lot of energy, so if you want to discourage negative puppy behavior from the start, wear them out! Schedule play sessions several times a day, and encourage your pup to explore, and run around your home or yard so that they’re too pooped to go and cause mischief. One of the leading causes of doggy misbehavior is pent up energy, which is also one of the easiest things to fix. Yorkies are prone to separation anxiety, especially once they become attached to their owners, so make sure you don’t leave your puppy alone for more than a few hours at a time; if you do, you’re going to have a dog that’s chewing and causing mischief in the house because of anxiety, and boredom. One way to put an end to this sort of behavior is to engage in play before you go out, so your Yorkie can rest while you’re gone.

Thanks so much for this info. I’m a new owner of a Yorkie and he freaked me out when he urinated NON-STOP for the first night! And left other evidence as well when we woke up. What are their sleep patterns because he stayed up ALL NIGHT!!!!
