What to feed your Yorkie

The most important thing to remember when researching dog foods, is that you should never feed your Yorkshire Terrier generic brand dog food.

These brands are able to sell their products cheaply because they use corn as one of the main ingredients; corn is one of the leading causes of allergies in dogs, and can lead to dry flaky skin, redness, and general irritation that are a pain to treat. Corn holds absolutely no nutritional value for your dog, and makes for an affordable filler for your pet, not consistent with a healthy diet.

When you bring your Yorkie puppy home, the first thing you will wonder about is what to feed your yorkie. They’re going to be anxious for a few days as they adjust to their new owners, and environment. Feed every six to ten hours, but don’t get worried if they don’t chow down at first! Many new puppies end up with diarrhea, and loss of appetite when they first arrive home. Find out what your puppy was eating before you brought him home, and continue with that food for a bit, slowly mixing in your own brand over time so that you don’t send your pets system into shock with a completely different food!

Yorkshire Terriers [and any breed] should be fed dry food only; wet food can be used as a treat, but it doesn’t promote a healthy diet, or healthy teeth. You should spend time figuring out the best dog foods that are in your budget, and we suggest an organic, all natural diet. Besides the generic brands we have already mentioned using corn fillers, they are also one of the causes of pet obesity, and health issues! Buy purchasing an all natural diet, that a dog would perhaps eat if he wasn’t a pet, you’re allowing him to be the healthiest he can be. Dogs that eat organic, fresh dry foods have healthier coats, and more energy. When you switch to a better Yorkie pet food, you will literally see the difference in your Yorkies appearance, and temperament A good all natural dog food will contain chicken, veal, beef, and a variety of fruits and vegetables to promote good health, and a long life. Meat rolls are also available at many pet centers, and they’re a good alternative to soft food and contain fresh meat, and fresh vegetables that are great for your Yorkie’s diet. You can keep them in the fridge, and add a few chunks to the dry diet to spice it up, and add extra nutrients.

For the Yorkie owner who wants the best of the best, considering making your own dog food. With the lack of affordable all natural products on the market right now, whipping up a weeks supply of dog food every Sunday night can be a great step to take. If you shop at Whole sale places for frozen chicken, beef, and veal you will save tons of money, and you’ll know exactly what foods are going into your dogs diet. If you do want to take that route, here are some simply, and doggy delicious recipes you can check out. If you plan on making your own food, avoid the following: onions [they can be toxic], chocolate, chicken bones [they can not be digested properly], and grapes. Yorkie’s are known for their sensitive stomachs, so you may need to experiment with a few food combinations that work for your pet.
