Whelping Pads for Your Puppies’ Safety
A whelping pad is made and designed for puppies to give them precisely all the comfort they need. There are, however, different types of whelping pads which can help provide your puppies just the right amount of temperature for their small, fragile bodies at this early stage in their lives.
Since some dog owners (first timers, specifically) usually rely on blankets/ or comforters, they also find it somewhat difficult to have such materials cleaned on a regular basis; not to mention they only have a blanket or two available for whelping.
If you have no whelping box available, a simple fence-like box can do the job, too. A whelping pad must be used in it for your puppies from the time they were born until they are big enough to carry themselves on their own.
A friend of mine, whose experience in whelping totally left her all freaking out; not really having the slightest idea what to do. The both of us have yorkies and I taught her everything I knew about the breed, specifically on whelping.
Well, at first she didn’t really know that whelping boxes, much more whelping pads do exist. She was just used to sending her whelping dog back then to the garage, and left the poor creature give birth alone in a very untidy corner (where rats run after chewing on something, I’m sure).
So when she called me and asked which materials would ‘sort of help’ her yorkie, I was at loss for words, seriously. Anyways I replied that “there are sorts of things you should know for Bessie (her whelping yorkie), and will you be a sweetheart, and list down what I am going to tell you?”, to which she gladly (and relieved, I could tell) did.
Apparently, this friend of mine was so stubborn; to the point that she would sacrifice her yorkie’s needs than spending just a bit for its safety, and longevity. Whatever changed her mind, I can say that it is a good thing that she sought me out, and expressed her wanting to make things right for her pregnant yorkie.
Aside from vitamins and scheduled trips to the vet, I emphasized that she should get a whelping box, and a whelping pad or two for the dam and her puppies. I also explained its purpose, and swore she would not let dear Bessie give birth in the garage, or anywhere in the house where she couldn’t keep an eye on.
