What You Need To Know About Whelping and Yorkies

Posted on 27 July 2009 by Melvin, Canine Rescuer

Whelping yorkies should never be taken casually. While breeding will most likely carry a great amount of risk to both the mother and the puppy, the risk of whelping yorkies is even greater due to the small nature of the mother. If you are not ready to accept the reality of losing the female yorkie during pregnancy or delivery, then you should avoid breeding her.
Having said that, here are some precautions that you need to consider in whelping and yorkies.

The first thing you need to do is to have the male and female yorkie examined by a veterinarian. This will help you determine whether your dog is in a clean bill of health and has no indication of a genetic disorder. You need to have them checked for Brucellosis, a reproductive disorder resulting from a bacteria which is transmitted through sexual contact, the milk of a lactating female, urine, or even air. The condition causes pregnant females to abort their litters and can make both sexes infertile.

If the veterinarian gives you the go signal to whelp yorkies, then proceed with the process. The total time from delivery to conception is sixty-three days. Bear in mind that within this period of time, a lot of things can go wrong in the process of whelping yorkies. For example, it may be necessary for the yorkie to undergo caesarian section if it has having difficulty delivering.

During the period of gestation, the mother and puppy should be fed with food and vitamins. You can ask for some recommendations on this aspect from your veterinarian and it is important that you follow their advice. Bear in mind that the health of the puppies will greatly depend on the health of the mother. As such, you need to do everything for her benefit.

In whelping yorkies, the delivery area is also important. Some breeders use cages because it provides more protection to the mother, especially if there are animals in the house, and it will also keep the puppies in one place. Just make sure that the cage has the conformation needed by the mother. You may also want to add heating pads.

During the actual delivery, you can easily determine if the female is in labor. Do not panic if the delivery wears on for two hours because this is not unusual. But if the female is straining and pushing for more than an hour, then this is a cause for concern. If this happens, you need to bring them to the veterinarian for possible caesarian section.

In a normal delivery, your assistance may be required by the mother. She still may not be able to clean all the puppies on her own or she does not have full understanding of what is happening. Bottle feeding may be necessary for large litters because the mother may not produce sufficient milk for her puppies. These are important things you need to bear in mind about whelping and yorkies.
