Why do yorkies stink?
By being clean, sanitation in Yorkshire terriers is meant: freedom from bacteria which cause skin diseases.
A little coat of dust or a degree of disorder does not discommode the yorkie dog or impair his welfare, but the best Yorkshire terrier owners are orderly people.
They at least do not permit broken straw and old bones to accumulate in their yorkie’s bed, and they take the trouble to spray with antiseptic or wash their yorkie kennels with soap and water at frequent intervals.
The feces in yorkies’ kennels should be picked up and destroyed at least once, and better twice, daily – to avoid yorkies to stink. Persistent filth in these kennels can be counted on as a source of illness sooner or later.
This warning appears superfluous, but it isn’t; the number of ill yorkies kept in dirty, unsanitary kennels is quite amazing.
It is one of the important things that keeping yorkies in their quarters must be kept neat, and at least free from odor to ensure that no disease can make your yorkie get ill.
Many people are truly disgusted to the point of a refusal to keep a yorkie by what they fancy as a ‘doggy odor’. The fact is that the mild emanations from a clean and well-fed yorkie are, like that of a clean child rather than pleasant.
The unpleasant smell associated with the yorkie is not in fact the odor coming from him, but rather the stench of his dirt and the exudations of unsound food portions with which he is fed.
Putrefying accumulations in the yorkie’s intestines, flatulence, the odor of his putrid breath, whether from mucous-coated teeth or from a stomach overloaded with decomposing carbohydrates can be very unpleasant to our senses, and the accumulation of dirt on the skin or in the yorkie’s hair, especially when damp – can cause one to hold one’s nose.
It is not worse, however, than the smell of the unwashed person with digestive disorders.
The remedy with the yorkie is to give him a bath, clean him out internally, and to see to it that he has only good, sound, easily digestible, and fresh-smelling dog food.
It is not to be denied that yorkie dogs do carry an odor, but it is not strong or unpleasant unless it is aggravated with dirt.
Claims are made for certain breeds (like Yorkshire terriers) that they ‘do not stink’, but all have odors, little different from another. Start healthy by keeping up with cleanliness all the time.
